When I was in college I got stress fractures in both of my shins after the fall season of lacrosse. Shortly after I had my bone density checked and discovered that I had osteoporosis. After a year of testing in an effort to discover why I might have such low bone density, I was diagnosed with Cohn’s disease. Amongst other things, Cohn’s can lead to mal-absorption of nutrients, which my Doctors believe led to my low bone density.
Because of my age, I was only 22 when I was diagnosed with osteoporosis, there were no treatments for my low bone density. My doctors told me the thing I could do was weight-bearing exercise. From that moment forth I started lifting weights at the gym and seeing a personal trainer. Every year I had my bone density re checked but it only got worse.
During the past 7 years, I have been on and off medications for Crohn’s disease that could have affected my bone density in a negative way (prednisone is a medication I have had to take within the last 2 years that is known to contribute to poor bone health).
Last week I got the results of a bone density test, which for the first time in 6 years showed improvement. Specifically, my bone density increased by 8% at the spine, which was my worst spot. I no longer have osteoporosis but rather osteopenia.
The only change I have made over the past year is working out with Felix 3-4 days per week. I have not changed my medicines or diet nor have I taken supplements to improve my bone health.
My Doctor was very impressed with the results of my test and when I informed him that the only change I had made was more consistent and vigorous workouts with a trainer he just said “keep it up.” At 29, it was unlikely to be able to increase my bone density. But thanks to Felix it happened.
Before training with Felix at City Fitness, I never picked up heavier than a ten pound dumbbell did not know how to do a single “lifting” exercise. Felix pushed me past my limit every day and I had no idea I could be this strong. Now I am front squatting 100+ and deadlifting 185×10 with all the confidence in the world after 10 months of training. He was always on time (5 am is early!) and very friendly. I can also add, from my perspective as a physician, that Felix has an outstanding understanding of anatomy that is very helpful in his approach to various workouts and specific exercises–he has a great focus on correct positioning and on adjusting exercises as needed. A major reason that I get to the gym twice weekly is Felix’s training.”
I currently train with Felix S. Can’t say enough about how great of a trainer he is! He was actually recommended to me by my first trainer who no longer works there. Felix is extremely knowledgeable and super experienced! That was my first impression of him because of the number of older clients he trains (older as in 50+) and he sure delivers. He emphasizes on form rather than reps and listens to the goals you want to achieve. Even in group sessions, he makes you feel like it’s a private session with his undivided attention to each and every client. I’ve never felt stronger and fitter.
As a type 1 diabetic, I rely on consistent exercise, along with other lifestyle modifications, to supplement the insulin I use as a treatment, in order to lower my hemoglobin A1C (a measure of how my blood sugar has been controlled). The problem, for me, has always been motivation – I’m a procrastinator, and too often, I would make excuses why i couldn’t go to the gym.
Felix is a fantastic motivator – he kept me going to the gym 3+ times/week, which has made a huge difference in my diabetes control. In the year working out with Felix, I had the BEST hemoglobin A1C test I’ve had in over 5 or 6 years!
Felix is consistently reliable, as well; I can think of maybe one instance over the course of a whole year when couldn’t make it into the gym (due to a snowstorm) and had to cancel.
Felix was also very flexible. Last summer, after injuring my shoulder, Felix made adjustments to my workout routine that allowed me to get back into the gym quicker than I would’ve expected with just physical therapy.
My experience with City Fitness thus far has been very good- now mind you- I’m strictly using the Semi-Private lessons at the gym, and i couldn’t be happier to be honest…..I’ve been working out for about 10 weeks now, and i’m definitely seeing results, and my trainer Felix S., is definitely a motivator and dedicated. Felix sends me my workouts when i travel- and he makes them pretty friendly to “non-gym” exercises if you don’t have access to a gym during your travels.
City Fitness an excellent gym been member for four month and have had nothing but an exceptional experience with the staff, management and especially Felix the trainer. Kudos to Felix I’m starting to see results and totally recommend him and city fitness
I would highly recommend Felix as a Personal Trainer. Felix is able to work with all ages and work out levels. The results I have seen in the last 3 months of training with Felix is excellent.
I have been working with Felix S. for the past 4 months and I have made a lot of progress. I have lost 40 lbs, and brought all my major metabolic numbers to normal levels. Still have a few pounds to go to be at my target BMI but I will keep working on it. Highly recommend working with Felix.
I’ve been doing the Thrive fitness program at City Fitness since December, and I absolutely recommend it to anyone who is sick of running on the treadmill and seeing no results. The small group training is well worth the price. I initially signed up to get in shape for my wedding, but am so happy with the results and how much better I feel that I plan to keep it up as long as I can! Felix comes up with fun and challenging workouts, and they’re simple enough that you can do them on your own on days you don’t have a session.
My first session with Felix was so productive that I decided to sign up for monthly semi-private training. I have a pretty extensive sports background and never thought I needed assistance–I was just wanting to take more time to actually work out. But Felix immediately spotted several old injuries and found mobility issues I wasn’t even aware of and took a unique approach. The trainers with whom I worked in the past generally spent half of our sessions talking about how to get more definition in my triceps or better abs. Everybody has some vanity, but I frankly know how to do that already and had the injuries to prove it. Felix instead focuses on range of motion, balance, and core strength. I’ve gotten so much out of his training that I’ve actually started lingering in Philadelphia longer in the past months to sneak in additional sessions. And any specialized space offering classes without the personal attention would be more at other places. Anyone looking to push him or herself should really consider it and definitely ask for Felix.
I’ve been training with Felix for the past year and I have never felt or looked better. Felix creates workouts specifically geared towards my needs and is continuously challenging me. I am never bored and when I start to hit a plateau he changes things up to keep my body guessing. Since I have started working out with Felix I have dropped 3 sizes and am the strongest I have ever been. I moved apartments three months after starting to train with Felix and I would only look at housing in the Graduate Hospital area so I didn’t have to change gyms.
City fitness is a great gym, super friendly staff, and super clean, great classes and if you decide to take advantage of any training I highly recommend it! Felix is my trainer and he is quite knowledgeable and will definitely make your hour session count! I highly recommend the training program! Felix is awesome!
Felix is my trainer and he’s awesome! The workouts always seem to kick my butt and I’m never bored. Location is great and the staff is really friendly. Definitely recommend.
Felix is seriously the best. I did sports in high school and college, but not a ton since then, just a little weightlifting here and there. Then I finished medical school and residency and wanted to get back in shape. From day one Felix designed a program and guided me through it, making sure my form was good and tweaking things along the way to make sure I was getting the most out of it. He’s a smart trainer too, knowledgeable about the science of fitness and nutrition and doesn’t buy into fads. The progress I’ve made with Felix over the past two years has been unbelievable, everyone around me has noticed. I look forward to going to the gym (never thought I would say that). I can’t recommend Felix highly enough!

I’ve been training with Felix for the past 6 months. He’s an excellent trainer. He’s friendly, motivating, attentive to form, knowledgeable, and great to work with. I have always been an avid gym-goer, and when I started working with Felix my workouts amped up. When I first started working with him he asked me what my goals were, and “I have no goals,” so he just put me on some workout regiments. Over the first few months there was an overall shift in my energy and physique (like losing 20+ lbs in 2 months), so I decided to stick with it.
Felix was great in that he was always encouraging and available. He also pushed me to push myself. I would not say that he was motivational, but more so helped me to create habits of success. Motivation is there one day and gone the next, but habits are hard to break.
One thing that I would say Felix could do more is mention his blog. It has some inspiration and motivation there!!”
